Reader Phillip writes:

I was wondering if you might be able to help figure out a mystery.  I was at dinner at Five in the Hotel Shattuck Plaza tonight and there was quite a bit of security presence.  There were several suited men with earpieces in the corner of the restaurant looking around, several of the same men outside with several uniformed police officers and several black SUVs.  Eventually they rushed someone out of a conference room in the hotel and whisked him off without me being able to get a good look.  With your finger on the pulse of Berkeley, we were hoping that you might have a lead!

Can any reader help Phillip solve his mystery?

  1. Sounds like everyone has figured it out, but yes we did have the Prime Minister of Armenia along with some other diplomats and scholars from both Armenia and Berkeley in our ballroom for an event that night.

  2. Well now I am addicted to Berkeleyside, thanks a lot, Deirdre.
I appreciate your using my name too, because now I feel very famous. Here’s an aside for you too. I pulled up to 5 and was fluffing my hair (just for you D.) when a polite, unmarked car, discreetly flashed a blue and yellow light at me from his back window.
I pulled up and asked him if I was not supposed to park behind him and he was apologetic. “Yes, sorry, noone can park here right now.”
“Right now,as in this minute, but in a few minutes I can?”
“No, right now, as in a few hours, I can go home to my family and then you can park.”
I love the Berkeley police. No sarcasm, perfectly serious.

  3. That must be it then! We asked our server and he said that he didn’t know. Thanks for the help everyone.

  4. Yes.. we were wondering as well. We were told we wouldn’t recognize him or know who he was by one of the drivers who had consulate type plates.

  5. Phillip! You truly have the finger on Berkeley’s urban pulse! Molly Gales and I were having drinks at the bar at Five, probably a few feet from you, noticing the hubbub* outside. Later in the evening, a white van pulled away, aggressively tailed by a police car. Ms. Gales queried the staff, who reported that a prime minister was visiting. But — which prime minister?
