FedEx Office is taking over the old Eddie Bauer space at 2201 Shattuck with an expected opening date in late May or early June.

The move is in fact a relocation from its current retail store at 2295 Shattuck which will close down. A FeEx Office spokesperson said they chose the new store because it is a “better, more convenient location for customers”.

  1. I miss Edy’s as well, but not the business that operated in that location under the name of “Edy’s” for the last several years before the building was remodeled.
That operation seemed to make its money on cigarette and lotto ticket sales.
If you only experienced that, you never experienced Edy’s.

  2. And don’t forget that KPFA was housed in the second floor of the building for decades!

I wonder: Has anyone done a study of occupancy rates of newly constructed buildings vs older buildings in downtown Berkeley? It seems to me that storefronts in the new buildings are vacant more often than those in the older buildings. Those who argue for more development in downtown should be able to document that new development actually produces businesses that endure. The opposite seems true to me.

  3. I will have to agree with John & Berto on that note. It was Eddie Bauer but it was a blip and then the name was changed to Edy’s Icecream Parlor which was quite successful and went out of business some few years later. They had some delicious Icecream and some delicious food there as well. I am glad to welcome Fed-Ex Offices to that space now that it has been chosen because of its approximaties to different shop locations.

  4. I agree John. Edy’s was the last successful business in that space. It was also an icon oft childhood. The Eddie Bauer was a blip.

  5. That’s not the ‘old Eddie Bauer’ space…it’s the ‘old Edy’s Ice Cream Parlor’ space!
