1634 Blake Street (left) where Tobias Pemadorji Eagle lost his life.

The Berkeley Police Department reports that the man who was found shot dead in his back yard Tuesday afternoon at 1634 Blake Street was 30-year-old Tobias Pemadorji Eagle.

The BPD has not made any arrests or confirmed a possible motive in the case, and does not believe this was a random shooting. It is offering a $15,000 reward, and Bay Area Crime Stoppers is offering an additional $2,000 reward, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects responsible for the city’s first homicide of 2011.

On Tuesday at about 1pm the BPD received a call of possible gunshots in the area of the 1600 block of Blake Street. Officers found Tobias Pemadorji Eagle of Berkeley lying in the rear yard of his home. City of Berkeley Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The BPD is urging anyone who may know anything about this homicide to call the BPD Homicide detail at (510) 981-5741 or the 24-hour BPD non-emergency number at (510) 981-5900. If a community member wishes to remain anonymous, he/she is encouraged to call Bay Area Crimes Stoppers at (800)-222-TIPS (8477). Any information may be critical to solving this crime. The police point out that sometimes the smallest, or seemingly insignificant, detail can be the key to arresting the suspect or suspects in a crime.

  1. Still I Rise

    You may write me down in historyWith your bitter, twisted lies,You may trod me in the very dirtBut still, like dust, I’ll rise.Does my sassiness upset you?Why are you beset with gloom?’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wellsPumping in my living room.Just like moons and like suns,With the certainty of tides,Just like hopes springing high,Still I’ll rise.Did you want to see me broken?Bowed head and lowered eyes?Shoulders falling down like teardrops.Weakened by my soulful cries.Does my haughtiness offend you?Don’t you take it awful hard’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold minesDiggin’ in my own back yard.You may shoot me with your words,You may cut me with your eyes,You may kill me with your hatefulness,But still, like air, I’ll rise.Does my sexiness upset you?Does it come as a surpriseThat I dance like I’ve got diamondsAt the meeting of my thighs?Out of the huts of history’s shameI riseUp from a past that’s rooted in painI riseI’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.Leaving behind nights of terror and fearI riseInto a daybreak that’s wondrously clearI riseBringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,I am the dream and the hope of the slave.I riseI riseI rise.Maya Angelou

  3. I work with Eagle’s mom, Ann. Our school community is so heartbroken and sad for the family. We are in an absolute state of shock and want to send lots of thoughts, love and prayers their way. We are ready to rally behind and support her during this tragic time.

  4. So sad I remember Toby he was a cool person very low key guy thats so messed up smh… To much black on black crime going on R.I.P my prayers go out to you & your fam!!!

  5. O frick, tears flow, heart aches, despite
    He’s not gone. He’s out. Toby’s in the light…
    all around, within, without.

    Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
    Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
    Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
    Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

    Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
    Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
    Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
    Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

    He was my North, my South, my East and West,
    My working week and my Sunday rest,
    My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
    I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

    The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
    Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
    Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
    For nothing now can ever come to any good.
