We’ve had The Princess Bride, Pixar’s Up, and Raiders of the
Lost Ark — and every week the number of participants has swelled at the Center Street outdoor Summer Cinema series, as people take advantage of a pedestrianized street, great food and drink options and a free movie screening.
Saturday sees the grand finale with The Big Lebowski showing on the wall of the future Berkeley Art Museum in the Bank of America parking lot.
“We’re expecting a big crowd, maybe upwards of 500, now that UC Berkeley is in session,” said John Caner, Executive Director of the Downtown Berkeley Association who is orchestrating the Summer Cinema event. “It should be great fun.”
Before the main feature starts, at around 8:30pm, moviegoers are encouraged to eat al fresco, enjoy musical entertainment — from Laura Weinbach of Foxtails Brigade on violin and the Fire Arts Collective – enjoy pre-movie cartoons, and enter a costume contest. Prizes will be awarded for the best Lebowski-related costume character.
Chairs are available for rent on Center Street, or you can bring your own. Warm clothes and a blanket or two might be a good idea. Special popcorn and snacks prepared by Five Restaurant is also available on the parking lot.
